The UAV attached sensor device

This UAV attached sensor device is used on site surveys to capture data telemetry for a specific site during flight. It carries several sensors that establish the environmental conditions of the site, as well as the cellular and WiFi signal strength of the surrounding area.

The device captures telemetry every second and stores it per site. Depending on flight time and the area surveyed, a typical flight collects approximately 500–1,000 datapoints.

What is captured on each flight

  • GPS position, and Easting / Northing
  • Cellular signal strength
  • WiFi signal strength
  • Humidity, temperature and barometric pressure
  • NH₃ gas (ppm)
  • Oxidizing agents (ppm)
  • Reducing agents (ppm)
  • PM1.0 µg/m³ — ultrafine particles ≤ 1 micron diameter
  • PM2.5 µg/m³ — combustion particles, organic compounds and metals, > 1.0 to ≤ 2.5 microns
  • PM10 µg/m³ — dust, pollen and mould spores, > 2.5 to ≤ 10 microns
  • PM1.0, PM2.5 and PM10 µg/m³ in atmospheric environment units
  • Particle counts > 0.3 µm, > 0.5 µm, > 1.0 µm, > 2.5 µm, > 5.0 µm and > 10 µm per 0.1 L of air

The point of logging signal strength alongside the environmental readings is that a site survey usually has to answer two questions at once: what is in the air here, and will anything be able to talk over it.
